The workshop will take place between 09.00am to 5.30pm on both days.
Day 1: 09:00 - 17:30
In the morning we will introduce you to the EIT RIS Cyprus and its programmes and to the field of biomimicry with special focus on sustainable land use in urban environments. You will learn about Biomimicry Thinking, the biomimicry tools and process for approaching design, which shift perspectives and open up new opportunities for how to solve and dissolve design challenges. It's based on the exploration of how organisms and ecosystems in nature meet their needs (functions), in context, in ways that continue to enhance the place in which they live, and in ways that are resilient in the face of ever changing conditions. Key tools for enhancing biomimicry thinking within your project or profession include the Biomimicry DesignLens and Life's Principles.
In the afternoon we start with ‘doing’ biomimicry by applying Biomimicry Thinking. While akin to a methodology, Biomimicry Thinking is a framework that is intended to help people practice biomimicry while designing anything. There are four areas in which a biomimicry lens provides the greatest value to the design process (independent of the discipline in which it is integrated): scoping, discovering, creating, and evaluating. Following the specific steps within each phase helps ensure the successful integration of life’s strategies into human designs. On this first day we will address Scoping; participants will learn how to do a first analysis of the selected design challenge and then do it themselves.

Day 2: 09:00 – 17:30
We will spend this day fully with the practice of biomimicry. In sub groups we work on cases related to sustainable land use inspired by Nature. Based on the outcomes of the Scoping process, we will Discover natural models, Create solutions with abstracted mechanisms and strategies found in nature and evaluate them (for sustainability) against Life’s Principles – nature’s key success factors of evolution. We will close out with a reflection of the 2 days and next steps to take.
Until then, you can watch Janine Benyus TED talk on Biomimicry to get inspired!
